UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard (10-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) underwent minor surgery this past week in Los Angeles to repair a nagging problem with his knee.
Although disappointed he won't be facing champ Frankie Edgar (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) at this weekend's UFC 130 event, Maynard expects to be back in the gym without much delay.
Physical therapy begins Wednesday for the Las Vegas fighter, who fought Edgar to a draw in their second meeting at UFC 125.
Maynard underwent knee arthroscopy, which is often used to repair damaged cartilage. Heavy.com first reported the procedure.
While some fighters remain on the bench for four to six weeks following the procedure, Maynard insists "it will be quicker than that."
After five action-packed rounds including a near-knockout in the first frame, Maynard and Edgar were crestfallen when a victor wasn't declared at UFC 125. The UFC subsequently booked a title rematch for UFC 130, but Edgar withdrew from the fight with injuries to his back and ribs, and Maynard's knee put him on the bench.
Maynard today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that while he would have fought anyway, Edgar's withdrawal routed him.
"It hit me from left field that he pulled out," he said.
Maynard owns a win over Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13. A date for a third fight has yet to be determined, but a fall date is possible.
